How much do green walls cost?
This is often one of the first questions anyone wanting to install vertical greenery. There are three types of vertical greenery: Green Walls, Vertical Gardens and Moss Walls. In this article, we will address green walls and discuss costs, as well as some of the options available to help you in your research. We have consistently answered these questions over the past 20 years as we were one of the first indoor green wall companies in Australia. These days, it’s still one of the first and most important questions for the prospective customer. This tells us that price does matter.
While we know this is not the only thing to consider, it’s still important. Price will often dictate the style and functionality, the size and the level of maintenance required for the green wall. You need to plan for the initial budget and any ongoing costs, and this is true for any living greenery of any size or style.
There are many variables and options, and it will be difficult to know the price until you’ve figured out exactly what you want and have had skilled professional advice and assessment of your space to see if you need any special or non-standard installation work.
At Green Design, we aim to educate all our prospective buyers, even if that leads you to another type of wall should ours not be the best fit. We will offer some realistic price ranges based on real costs right now (in 2021). These will be estimates based on average products and you’ll always need a full consultation and quote for your actual costs.
What is the basic cost of a green wall?
Green walls start from less than $600 and the top end can reach beyond $25,000 (as there is really no limit to how tall/long you want your wall to be ). This does not include ongoing maintenance which we’ll discuss later.
As with any project requiring installation, this price range can increase dramatically as you add more options and more elaborate designs, which might include water features, custom cut outs for TV or other insets, logos, additional lighting and more.

This is only a quick overview of the main costs of a green wall installation and its maintenance, but it is a great starting point for making your plans.
DIY installation (with or without plants)
Some customers just want a DIY kit. If this is you, keep in mind there could be many variables and costs involved and there is almost never the ability to customise your wall. You should follow instructions to the tee to ensure the wall is safely installed. Bad DIY installation can often cause far more trouble and long-term costs, outweighing any savings upfront. Make sure they are for indoor use!
These types of walls start from around $300 per sqm, and do not include plants.
For a lush look, plants for this would be an additional cost of approx. $320 to $640 per sqm
You may also need to pay for shipping.
You will need to maintain and replace plants ($10 to $20 each) from time to time at your own cost. (Plants can have issues in the initial installation period and even with professional care plants in green walls will need replacing over time).
Professional installation and maintenance (with plants)
At Green Design, we fully maintain our green walls once installed, we guarantee the installation and replace any plants that become unhealthy for the entire duration of the maintenance contract. This means your maintenance is all inclusive and your green wall will always look great!
Your maintenance contract should not be longer than 2 years so you can ensure you keep your maintenance company accountable and change them if they are not performing. Of course, we aim to keep our clients happy at all times!
Green Design’s NextGen green walls, including delivery and installation of all plants and no plumbing or drainage required, would range from $600 to $1,000 per sqm including installation of all plants (around 30 lush plants). That’s it…your green wall is installed and ready.
Maintenance for the above size wall would be approx. $25 to $30 per sqm per month. This includes replacement plants as required. For Interior Designers and Architects, this would be paid direct by your clients and we can consult with them on this.
All green walls need good lighting and Green Design will be able to advise whether or not supplemental lighting is required to ensure your indoor green wall survives and thrives.
